Adoption Went Up. Output Didn’t.

Adoption Went Up. Output Didn't.

Why AI training moved the dashboard and not the delivery, and what the teams who got it right did differently.

  • Coached teams roughly doubled PR throughput against a tool-trained control group
  • The control group’s AI usage rose while their output fell by around 5%
  • The gains were a team property, not an individual one
  • A practical framework for measuring AI upskilling in your own organisation

Two steps to take today

Step one, join the conversation about what the findings mean.

CTO Craft Bytes, Don’t Humanise the Machine. Don’t Mechanise the Human.

Friday 16th October, 12.00 to 13.00 UK time, online Hywel Carver, CEO of Skiller Whale, and Andy Skipper, CEO of CTO Craft.

The research shows that productivity gains come from expertise and from teams learning together, which raises questions the data cannot settle on its own. Which responsibilities stay firmly in human hands, what changes about team structure and hiring, whether the gains should change how you measure engineering success at all, and how coaching and mentorship survive in a team where much of the first draft is machine-written. If the findings here landed, this is where to bring them.

Step two, build the same understanding at the top of the organisation

Skiller Whale are running a small number of workshops for CTO Craft Community members interested in learning more.

The Curse of Expertise: GenAI, You and Your Non-Technical Peers, a live micro-workshop

Your non-technical peers don’t need another GenAI 101, but they don’t have the same strong mental model you do for what is and isn’t possible, efficient, or dangerous. You have a level of expertise it’s impossible to share, and the result is your peers can’t make good, independent decisions about where to invest, what to change, or what to worry about.

This workshop focuses on how to educate your non-technical colleagues to make them autonomous without turning yourself into the organisation’s full-time AI translator. The workshop will cover how to make GenAI intelligible, relevant and actionable for nontechnical senior leaders, as well as getting their buy-in to your AI technical strategy. The goal isn’t to turn your exec peers into AI experts, but rather to get them to a place of greater autonomy where they ask better questions, spot opportunities, understand the risks and can make decisions.

Places are very limited so if you’d like to be considered please complete the form using the link below and we’ll follow up to confirm availability and eligibility.
